How to Host a Wayground Game (Live or Homework)

To host a Wayground game, open the quiz you want, choose whether to run it as a live session or assign it as homework, pick a mode, then share the join code with your students. You need a free teacher account to host, but students don’t need one to take part.

This guide covers both ways to host, how to pick between them, and how students get in.

Before you start

Two quick things:

• You need a teacher account. Hosting is a teacher feature, so sign in first. If you have any trouble getting in, our login help page covers the fixes.
• Have a quiz ready. Either make your own, or pick one from Wayground’s library. You don’t have to build anything from scratch to host.

How to host a live Wayground game

A live session is the classic version, where the whole class plays together in real time.

1. Open the quiz you want to run.
2. Choose “Live Session” (sometimes shown as “Start now”).
3. Pick a pace. Teacher-Led means you control when everyone moves to the next question. Student-Paced lets students move at their own speed.
4. Customise the settings if you want, then start.
5. Share the join code. It appears on your live dashboard. Students enter it at wayground.com/join.
6. Watch the dashboard. You’ll see scores update in real time as students answer.

The join code shows on screen the moment the session starts, so you can read it out or display it for the class.

How to assign a game as homework

An assigned session is for when students can’t all play at the same time.

1. Open the quiz and choose the “Assign” option.
2. Set a deadline. The session code stays active for that whole period, so students can join whenever suits them.
3. Adjust settings like the number of attempts allowed.
4. Click Assign, then share the join code or link with your class.

Because the code stays live until the deadline, you don’t have to keep a session running yourself. Students work through it on their own time, and you review the reports afterward.

Live or homework: which should you pick?

It comes down to timing:

• Live suits a lesson where everyone is in the room together and you want energy and instant feedback.
• Homework suits revision, catch-up, or any time students are working separately.

You can use the same quiz either way, so it’s an easy switch depending on the day.

Live session modes worth knowing

When you run a live game, Wayground gives you a few modes to set the tone:

• Teacher-Led: everyone moves together at your pace. Good for guided instruction.
• Test Mode: a plain, distraction-free setup for formal assessment.
• Team Mode: students play in teams and add to a shared score, which is good for group competition.

How students join your game

Once you’re hosting, students can get in a few ways:

• Enter the join code at wayground.com/join.
• Open a link you share through Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology.
• Scan a QR code you display.
